It's Goof-Off Day!

...During which we goof off by reliving last summer's goofing off, since this is obviously not a winter picture. This is my critique group at a surprise birthday party for the lady in the baseball hat, whose family managed to keep the sizable bash a complete surprise, and who probably wouldn't have worn the hat if she'd guessed what was going down.

This group of writers has been together for 15+ years, during which we've celebrated books, awards, children's weddings, births of grandchildren, a retirement, a college graduation, and did I mention books? And unlike many groups that meet for a two-hour time slot and stick to business, we need our full, non-clock-watching measure of food and conversation -- call it goofing off if you like -- before we ever get down to the business we purportedly got together for.

There's a certain level of ease and familiarity that develops before people can goof off together. Today, why not take a few moments to give thanks for those with whom you can goof off?

Marcia, that's lovely that you've been with your group for so long ... that you can goof off. The lady off to the right looks awfully young though ... did she start writing as a toddler?

Great picture. That is so cool that you've been together for 15 plus years.

Vijaya -- LOL, that's a great compliment for Connie. (Actually, three of us range over only 2 1/2 years in age.)

Kimberly -- The time has flown. We were all fuzzy on how many years it had been, except I remember one of them meeting my daughter for the first time and asking her age, and her answer, "Eleven." That daughter is now 26.

Rena -- As time goes by, I'm gladder and gladder that this group has been so stable. Two of us tried a second, online group a couple of years ago that didn't work out. I do suppose our similar stages in life help us feel connected.

Been together for 15 years? That's a gift indeed to be very grateful for. You gals deserve to goof off!

15 years wow! That's great. I hope I can say the same thing in 15 years!

Jeff -- I so agree! Happy New Year.

Lynn -- When I read of the sticky situations in other groups I feel really blessed. What's neat is that our socializing and critiquing BOTH work.

Laura -- That amount of time means we all kept writing, through it all, which is so cool. We've all gotten published, and we've all had dry periods. Sometimes we've changed direction. But we're all still here. :)

The better we know each other, the better we get each other's writing, too. Thank you all for coming. :)

What a nice story!

Happy New Year, Marcia. Hope you reach all your writing goals this year (and the other ones, too ; )

What Kimberly said. It's a testament to your character (and personalities) that you've managed to work together for 15 years.

I would be able to enjoy goofing off a lot more if I wasn't so good at doing it all the time. In 2011, I plan to write harder and better so that when I goof off, I'll really know I'm doing it and enjoy it more.
